I am still trying to wrap my head around the micro-school concept. Is it an alternative to current schooling system or a more humane extension?

Each micro-school is unique in its pedagogical approach. In conventional schools, teachers often cannot provide a compassionate experience due to the inherent constraints of class size, hyper-standardization, social malignancies like racism, etc. So I would say that the micro-school concept offers a better chance of developing a safe and nurturing environment, but it can't guarantee one. Design a micro-school to be humane, follow through on that design, and it will be.

I love the idea of micro-schools. They definitely attract a lot of neurodiverse kids. I switched from public to a small private school (12 in a class max) in high school. Because of that, I think there are HUGE benefits to small schools. It’s fantastic that these schools are more affordable than private schools, too.

My kids are autistic, and their best year of school was at a homeschool co-op that opened a morning private school. We had preschool through high school and they were in elementary. I taught 4th-6th grade English and History with about 8 students in my class. It was awesome!
